America’s Shuttered Malls

Here’s a partial list of the corporate fatalities shuttering America’s shopping malls.  The expanding list of US retail chains likely to vanish from the landscape during 2009 includes Circuit City, Linens ‘N Things, Mervyn’s, Sharper Image, CompUSA, Lane Bryant, Gap, Eddie Bauer, Pacific Sunwear, Zales jewelry, Sears-Kmart, Mrs. Fields’ Cookies, Applebee’s and Cheesecake Factory, and perhaps even Starbucks (GASP!). And more pain is on the way, reports Forbes Magazine. “One-third of US women recently surveyed by America’s Research Group said they plan no clothing purchases – none – in 2009. Normally, it’s just 4%. That means the market is still far too saturated with stores. (But Ronald McDonald will prosper in 2009.) For too many Americans now, it’s McDonald’s or bust,” says Forbes.
