As an outsider looking in this paragraph caught my attention more than the rest:

“The death of Chavez will be a game-changer for the Bolivarian/Cuban regime. When Chavez is irrevocably dead, the constitution finally will apply – theoretically, at least, given the assembly’s and supreme court’s penchant for doing whatever is politically expedient for the regime’s determination to remain in power.”

Maybe I am wrong, but I think his death will make him even more “God-like”, if that is possible to his followers and this would be even more of a boost for the Bolivarian/Cuban regime. It is pretty much known that the National Assembly and Supreme Court will do as they are told by him and/or his party.

This is completely off topic, but I feel that until Venezuela goes back to paper ballots that the opposition will lose every election. Why not let the oppo have a couple of state elections so long as they control everything else.

I could not agree more with this post! Today, January 10th 2012, it is cristal clear that the opposition and Venezuelans that do not support the regime are not capable of showing that what is happening is the worst constitutional violation ever! Venezuela is in he hands of Chavez and Cuba. It is time for Venezuelans to really show that they believe in democracy and freedom.

Hey Gringo,

I see you’ve been saving up that rant for a long time now…

Can’t say I disagree, but I normally expect more nuance and a little inside scoop from you. The frustration here for any intelligence analyst is that no one can really predict what will happen. If the Venezuelan government were making rational decisions, it would be different. Rational people (and governments) evaluate their options and decide based on their best interests. It is not a perfect science, because sometimes risk factors are not evaluated correctly. But, in general, it is possible to evaluate a short list of options and assign probabilities for a government selecting one of those options. But, at the moment, neither the Venezuelan government, nor the players in it are behaving rationally or in their best interests. So, anything is possible.

Roger severely discredited himself in Washington. There’s the defamation lawsuit and other unknowns so he’s out of the Venezuela game.

Chris Dodd was in relations with Nicaraguan born Bianca Jagger on and off during this period. Bianca introduced him to the Sandinistas…no me recuerdo but look it up. Dodd a POS in my book but he cleared the U.S. Government of being involved in 11A events (he called for GAO investigation) and subsequently saw things for what they where in VE.

Thanks for the story.The biggest contribution Chris Dodd made to the US Senate was to leave it.
